30 days....

Ok, so i've been here a month now and i've come to the following conclusions:-
  • Melbourne is an AWESOME and vibrant city
  • they have far more mexican restaurants than Wellington
  • if you want to go and see a concert (music) you need to get tickets as soon as they go on sale, otherwise you miss out and are disappointed..
  • they have FAR too many super cool shops here (clothes, shoes)....argghh damn you
  • i probably need a job $$...now
In the past month I have managed to sucessfully (most of the time) navigate the city and use the public transport - yay me.
The public transport here is awesome and frequent so you can see that there is no need for a car really (although i do miss driving a bit). I've also done a lot of walking which has been good.
Infact I walked all the way over to Brunswick st from Richmond and back yesterday - we are talking a good 30-40 min walk one way, although I did have blisters when i got home..ouch.

Not sure if you were aware but Melbourne is having a heatwave (started  about 2-3 weeks ago now). Apparently it's been the hottest November in history since 1902!!! The first 2 days I had a migraine and had to stay in a dark room with a wet towel on my head.
I'm talking mid-late 30s, the wind is warm, you sweat from your elbows..? is this normal?
I've had to purchase a fan that I have going all night otherwise I would evaporate from the heat.
A bit of a change from Wellington, even on a sunny day, I can actually leave the house knowing I don't need to take a jacket or jersey.
Hence I've developed a slight tan and have been borrowing Dave's umbrella to use as a parasol when i go out.
I think I'm adjusting now though, even if it's super hot during the days it's manageable, it's mainly the nights when you are trying to sleep in that heat that is the hardest, but in saying that the last 2 nights have been slightly cooler. Everyone has told me to get used to it, it will be like this through till Feb and in Jan we can get to 40 for a couple of days....no, um no thanks
This also means that water is precious, so we recycle as much water as we  can. After the shower stops you quickly put the bucket under the dripping tap.
Residents have set days and times where they are allowed to water their gardens. So water fights are a no go and would be frowned on.
The fire dept will be preparing for the annual bushfire season too no doubt.

As far as keeping active I've joined up a dance studio and am doing casual dance classes. They are really good and the teachers are of high standard (for those in the know I would say they all follow the american jazz syllabus). Although I must admit trying to do a class in mid 30's temperature is a challenge I mean if you are hot already and then doing an hour of cardio type work out - that's extreme.
I'm sure the other night i sweated every ounce of sweat out of me which i guess is a good thing...?
But I'm certain i scared fellow punters at the vege food joint i went to to have a salad for dinner - noone sat near me. Fair enough, just the way i like it..haha

I'm still squatting at Paul and Deryn's flat, although I do feel like i've overstayed, but they are very very nice and keep saying stay as long as you need, it's better that you get a job first and get yourself financially sorted, which does make sense as you pretty much neeed AUD $2000 straight up to go flatting (a months rent + a month for bond is standard).
I did think about the possibility of housesitting, but I think you might have to have had 'experience', anyway I may still look into that.
Anyway Paul has told his friends that i'm and i quote "a good little cleaner" - he is the cook of the house (the way he likes it, he enjoys cooking and is very good at it) so I do the dishes.

With regards to been unemployed it was good for the first couple weeks - just having a break and getting to know the city, but I find I'm missing the routine and structure and having too much time is now wearing a bit thin..as is my mula$.
Given that i'm now living in a city with the population of NZ as a whole. I think you need to be alot more assertive and nearly all of the jobs are via recruitment agencies, which for me is a bit of a drag uggh - anyhow as we are nearing Xmas there are plenty of retail jobs available so could easily do that over Xmas/New Year and start looking for 'proper' work when all has settled down.

The flatties are away this weekend - they've gone away for the weekend about 4hr drive out of Melbourne, and then they are doing some sort of walk/tramp to a lighthouse where you can stay. There is a big group of them, so in the week leading up there were lots of meetings and discussions about who was bringing what, and the grocery list..
I opted out and said i was more than happy to stay behind and take care of the cats and fish.

On other news...some of you may be or may not be aware that my boyfriend Renzo is moving over here on 31 December - YAY!
We met back in Wellington a couple of months prior to me leaving (murphy's law how these things happen).
He is a super cool, down to earth and lovely guy with a love of metal music and admiration of  NIN (a band) something we both have in common AND  he is also a very talented artist, so it's really cool been able to discuss our art together, we have quite different styles.
He has a degree in Marketing and Comms (i hope this is the correct one R haha).. and will be looking for work as a copywriter.
So I'm really really excited about him coming over as it will fun to be new in the city and share exploring and eating mexican together awwww haha.
Ok so that's all the soppy stuff then haha

Anyway it's 8.45 am on a Saturday and i'm awake and writing a blog entry...?? weird
Better drink my coffee before it gets cold.

Love to all
Keep cool till after school

School Band's version of 2001 Space Odyssey...

Ok so this really doesn't have a lot to do with my time in Melbourne. Its just that it is ....well, watch, listen and see how your view of the world is after...
words that came to mind for me: speechless, um..hahahahaha, sheer brilliance ...speechless

In the Beginning

Ok, so I worked out that there are a few people to keep updated about my 'shift' to The Land of Oz...

So rather than reply to each and everyone of you individually, i decided to be lazy, or ultra efficient - depends on which way you look at it, and do a blog.

So I've now been here in Melbourne for just under 2 weeks.

Basically here is a  summary of what has happened since the plane touched down a fortnight ago.

Sailed through customs, walked outside was met my Paul..grabbed trolley and quickly wheeled over to the green car that Dave was driving. nb: Paul and Dave are friends both kiwis who I am staying with and Deryn (Paul's Aussie girlfriend), oh and the 2 cats - Inigo and Fezzick.
Their flat is located in a suburb called Richmond, which is East of the CBD. A very handy location 5 mins walk to Bridge and Swan streets = lots of good cafes and shops within walking distance. Plus about 15 mins on tram into CBD.

1st weekend
The flatmate's went away on a weekend cycling trip, I was invited but I opted to stay behind and settle in for the weekend and just get to know the city. Trammed into town and walked around the CBD, joined up local video store, enjoyed strolling around neighbourhood, eating vege burger from nice burger joint up the road, fending of 2 greedy and cheeky cats, trying to work the fancy coffee machine and failing miserably.

1st week
Decided I could allow myself a holiday before the job hunting stuff. So basically spent the first week visiting various suburbs and areas, whilst enjoying the odd sleep in.
I have since visited the following places.

1) Victoria Road - this is where my aussie bank branch is located. Basically a lot of vietnamese and thai businesses. Sometimes i actually felt like i was in Vietnam, street is lined with various asian groceries and the owners and customers alike speaking their native tongue, great to hear.

2) Bridge Road (a main road in Richmond) - lined with cafes, delis, clothing shops a whole choice of different food joints, people sitting on the road enjoying cafe food and coffee and sometimes their small dogs accompany them. I found a really nice place that makes traditional italian style soups - really yummy.

3) Brunswick St
Located north of CBD, this is like the Cuba Street area, except on a bigger scale. Lots of young, arty types hang there. My kinda place, heaps of great clothing stores and alternative style shops. I had to be VERY restrained there. But once i'm earning some cold hard cash i'll be back in a flash.

4) Chapel St
This is the richy area, people with money go here. Hence I only looked in the shops and didn't buy anything.
I went to see the latest Woody Allen movie in a movie theatre here, they play more arty types of movies, similar to Paramount or Penthouse. nb: i enjoyed the movie, Larry David was in it and he was funny - those who enjoy Curb your Enthusiasm might enjoy.
Also I went to a dance class, the studio  is located just off chapel street and after class, while i was waiting at the tram stop saw one of the girls in my class (she looked about 25 max) driving what looked pretty similar to that of an audi convertible....???!!! how is this possible???

Anyway that's what i've been up to all sightseeing.

With flatmates i've done the following:-
  • Beer and curry at local pub
  • Bike ride into town on Sunday to go to Indonesian Food Festival at federation square
  • Dinner at cafe followed by play at theatre called The Apocolyptic Bear Triology...actor in bear costume with voice identical to Alan Rickman...odd play...all a bit dumbfounded after..
  • Shopping for veges at the local market
  • drank the following beverages:- brandy and dry, vodka and dry, beer of some description, coffee
  • movie at some theatre in some suburb (aussie film by director of Shine, starring Clive Owen) quite good

Finale of this post.
1) still hunting for job. had interview with recruitment agency for job also signed up with them for temp work, she's putting me forward for interview with company, will prob find out next week what the deal is there.

2)flat hunting , gonna see a place on saturday , but due to lack of income at moment may need to hold off, as getting flat means rent + bond upfront , usually months worth and don't think i can realistically afford that quite yet. Plus Paul, Deryn and Dave are really awesome and said there is no rush for me to be out and can stay as long as i need until i get myself financially sorted and  as long as i keep up the good dishwashing duties..

Well there you have it folks , that's this installment.
I'll keep you updated via this method if there is any interesting news to report, otherwise i'll just write something fairly mundane.

Keep cool till after school
